The NFL will host its fourth season of the Football Officiating Academy. The program is designed to educate future official candidates, ages 17-30, on basic football rules and philosophies. NFL officials, scouts and supervisors will serve as instructors.
-- Steve Freeman and Phil McKinnely --

The recent labor dispute between the NFL Referees Association and NFL clubs has been resolved in time for the regular crews to return for the fourth weekend of play. Two retired NFL players – former Bills and Vikings safety STEVE FREEMAN (1975-1987) and ex-Falcons, Rams and Bears tackle PHIL MC KINNELY (1976-1982) – are among the 121 officials who will be working under the new eight-year contract.

Freeman is a Texas native who attended Mississippi State. He played on same defensive unit at Bills with JIM HASLETT, FRED SMERLAS, and DARRYL TALLEY. McKinnely was born in California and played his collegiate ball at UCLA. During his five years with the Falcons, his line mates included Pro Bowlers JEFF VAN NOTE and MIKE KENN.
